As part of the H-ACERO 2 project, we are collaborating with the CEIT technology center on key research to evaluate the behavior of refractory materials when exposed to hydrogen combustion in equipment essential to the steel industry, such as ladles, furnaces, and troughs.
To this end, after developing equipment that replicates real-world operating conditions—where water vapor is the primary degrading agent—we have pursued two lines of research. On the one hand, we are analyzing how the properties of these materials change following high-temperature heat treatments. On the other hand, work is underway to design new formulations with greater resistance to hydration that are capable of withstanding the new conditions that will arise in the decarbonized steel industry.
About H-ACERO2
The overall objective of H-ACERO2 is to drive the decarbonization of the Basque Country’s steel sector through the use of hydrogen as an alternative energy source to fossil fuels at various stages of the steel production process.
The project addresses the challenge of researching and developing different technologies that contribute to the decarbonization of the steel sector through the use of H₂ and O₂ in the production process.
