During next Easter period, If you, foundry men are going to do a repair of your furnace, most probably you do not have too much time to do the dryout. Beside phosphatic castable, INSERTEC presents you a new generation of refractory castables to be used in many applications. They are based in the SOLGEL bonding systems. With a proper selection of controlled gelling agents, the colloid is gelled around the refractory particles which, after the drying process, forms a gel skeleton and provide dried strength to the refractory. Since colloidal silica is a stable colloid, available easily and economically at high concentrations, it is used as the main source of the gel-bond refractories.

SOL-GEL Concretes have the following characteristics:

  • They do not require a long mixing time . 30-50% less time. There is no need to mix additives or deflocculants.
  • They require minimal or no vibration . They are very cohesive and self-leveling concretes.
  • Less drying time . No water is used. Silica or colloidal alumina is used. Colloidal silica is more viscous than water and therefore keeps the solid phase slightly more separated than mixing it with water. Thus, its permeability is superior, favoring drying and reducing it by up to 50% compared to LCC and ULCC.
  • Greater refractoriness. Altering reactive nano particles are formed that with the alumina of the matrix give rise to mullite, this being the maximum degree of refractoriness of the system.
  • Better chemical resistance . Formation of mullite without the appearance of vitreous phases (gelenite-anorthite).
  • Better resistance to oxidation . In sol-gel concretes with carbon content, the carbon is covered, protecting it from oxidation.
  • Longer life of use. Combining the properties of better resistance to thermal shock, better chemical resistance and resistance to oxidation, the life of these coatings is superior.
  • Longer shelf life. There is no cement in its formulation.
  • And on top of it, as less time is required for dry out, less CO2 emissions will happen during the start up operations of ladle and furnaces lined with solgel castables.

Our product range

INSERTEC presents a complete range of solgel castables to be used in the iron & steel, aluminium, cement and frits industries.
The trade name of our castables are:

  • FAST ON…: Iron, Steel, Cement, Aluminium
  • ALFASTON: Aluminium
  • ULTRALOC- GZ: Frits

See in the following to graphs the main differences between a 60% LCC alumina castables and the equivalent 60% SG alumina castable when doing a LAB test thermogravimetry.
While INSELOC-61SR does not release all the water till 600ºC in the FASTON-60 at 150ºC the water has been completely released. This incredible property makes the dryout easier with all its economical consequences.

It is also true that these materials have very low mechanical properties at room temperature and for this reason, a good and proper design must be done… but at high temperatures these materials develops a very high mechanical properties.

Ask to your representative the best material for each case.
